Our History
FoMM began in 2006 as a consumer group created to help midwives promote their profession-something they often have a hard time doing as they are usually working around the clock with birthing women. In 2007, a Board of Directors was formed, and the organization began to take shape, with volunteers helping out at the Michigan Midwives Association's (MMA) conferences.
In 2008, regional groups were formed in Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Grand Rapids. FoMM volunteers from all over the state joined MMA members in traveling to Traverse City to volunteer behind the scenes at the 2008 MANA conference. And, a successful first pancake breakfast fundraiser was held by the Lansing Region.
In 2009, FoMM became proactive in helping the Michigan Midwives Association's efforts to gain licensure for Certified Professional Midwives practicing out of hospital. The Northern Michigan Chapter formed with a roaring start by putting on the Family Music Festival, the first fundraiser targeted at the licensure initiative.
In 2010, FoMM began the Great Lakes, Great Midwives! series of fundraisers, targeted at promoting awareness of the issue of licensure for Certified Professional Midwives as well as funds for lobbying. Events have were held in Traverse City, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor. We also continue to be present at various local events to spread awareness of the Midwives Model of Care to the public.
Our Mission
To educate and inform the public about the profession of midwifery and the Midwifery Model of CareTM; to promote and support the profession of midwifery in the state of Michigan; and to support local chapters of FoMM in providing hands on services and assistance to the midwives in their area.
