Take Action

There are many ways that you can help with the efforts for licensure for Certified Professional Midwives who specialize in out-of-hospital birth. Here are 4 steps to get you started!

Step One: Become Involved with FoMM.

FoMM is a volunteer based non-profit organization that is continually seeking financial donations

in order for us to run, volunteers to help with our cause, and members to demonstrate support for midwifery.

 Step Two: Know the Issue.

Visit our FAQ page to get some basics on what licensing means for both consumers and midwives. Watch this clip from Reducing Infant Mortality to give you more information about the necessity of out-of-hospital births for the well-being of our babies and mothers.

Attend one of our legislative update meetings to find out the latest news in person regarding licensure in Michigan and what it means for midwives and consumers alike.

Join the Licensure For Midwives Yahoo Group to stay up to date on the latest legislative happenings in Michigan.

Check out The Big Push for Midwives , which is a consumer group promoting licensure of Certified Professional Midwives in all parts of the U.S.  CPMs now practice legally in 27 states.  The Big Push group provides links, resources, help, connections, and modeling for successful legislation for CPMs in those states that remain without a licensing option for these midwives.

Step Three: Know Your Legislator.

Don't know your district, senator, representative, or how the legislature works?

Visit the Michigan Legislature to find out more. You can find out who represents your districts by entering your zipcode here.

Learn the basics of advocacy by reading up on the 10 Commandments of Public Policy Advocacy.

Step Four: Attend our legislation training.

Are you interested in speaking directly with legislators to demonstrate consumer support for midwives? We have two trainings scheduled for Fall 2010 with our consultant on how to be an effective consumer for midwives. Email president@friendsofmichiganmidwives.com to find out more information.

Many of the supporters of FoMM have had a midwife touch our lives, hopefully we can all give back in some way to ensure that future generations will have the great experience and care of a midwife.
